Hello!
I was recently invited to contribute some tips for neurodiverse couples moving in together, particularly related to decorating ideas and merging your styles. It was interesting to reflect back on what I’d have valued to know from someone before I moved in with Pete 30 years ago had we known then how different we are!
Since we discovered neurodiversity 10 years ago, reconnecting with and discovering our personal styles and how we value and use personal space differently have been important steps in establishing a healthier relationship.. individually and together.
I wonder what you’re finding or have always found challenging about sharing a home together when it comes to differences in your personal spaces needs and preferences and your different design or decorating ideas?
My tips to Rent.com for the blog were:
Use Separate Spaces to Reflect Your Individual Tastes
‘Navigating neurodiversity, autism, ADHD in your relationship? Two Top Tips.. First.. prioritise individual personal space to support different sensory and social needs and preferences and opportunity for alone time when needed. Second.. when decorating, beware of preference abandonment or preference projection, i.e. giving up what’s important to you or forcing/persuading on others what’s important to you! Without a check on it in early stages, significant compromise over time in a neurodiverse relationship can leave both partners dissatisfied. Individual rooms versus open plan typically works best for neurodiverse couples.’
