Welcome back!

We all have some everyday routines and adding children to the mix brings its own share of needing certain routines. For the most part though, I’m more of a ‘go with the flow kinda gal’.

Looking back on my relationship, I can see where conformity began to creep in. As the relationship continued I fitted in more and more with my partner’s routines. Children also had to fit in with them. Discussion or negotiation about these kinds of things caused a lot of tension. In the end I complied and it was a nightmare I didn’t know how to wake up from.

The devastating result is an erosion of the opportunity to be spontaneous. Things like heading to the beach because the sun’s come out, skipping lunch because you got immersed in something, seeing a friend at a moment’s notice.

What spontaneous joys are you missing out on because you’re fitting in with your partner’s routines?

I have created new opportunities to be spontaneous like days when I don’t know what I’m eating until it’s time to eat, through to scheduling a day with no plan whatsoever!

I don’t expect my partner to join me in being spontaneous – it’s my partner’s worst nightmare.

I’m so glad I’ve woken up from mine.

Some neurodiverse relationships have the opposite issue where their partner has no structure or routines whatsoever and this can be just as challenging to deal with. In this situation, creating opportunities for you to have your own routines will be important.

Whichever version you are dealing with in your relationship, there is a way to get things back on track.
